Camp Morton News

On March 27 and 28, 2004, the Civil War comes to Camp Morton!  The 11th Indiana Regiment of Zouaves is looking forward to holding its camp of instruction on the original site of Camp Morton.  At the beginning of the Civil War, Lew
Wallace (author of
Ben Hur) was chosen by Governor Morton to be Adjutant

General. One of Wallace’s jobs as
Adjutant General was to locate a training camp for new volunteers. Wallace chose a 36 acre tract, which was formerly owned by Indianapolis’s first mayor Samuel
Henderson, as the new training camp for troops.  The property had also served as the Indiana State Fairgrounds.  By April 1861, the camp had shelter for 6,000 men.  There were actually several camps located throughout downtown Indianapolis.  The new training camp was named Camp
Morton in honor of the Governor.

As reenactors, the men of the 11th Indiana portray the life of a Civil War
soldier as authentically as possible from their uniforms and weapons to accoutrements. As historians, we use reenacting as a medium to honor the brave men of the 11
th and uphold their ideals and beliefs.  We enjoy speaking with individuals and groups regarding the event surrounding the Civil War.

General Lew Wallace was a prolific author and attorney from Crawfordsville, Indiana.  Wallace requested a field command in early 1861 and received a commission as Colonel of the 11th Indiana.  The 11th Indiana was the first regiment from Indiana to respond to President Lincoln’s call for troops.  Dressed in gray Zouave-style uniforms with red trim, the 11th performed drill in keeping with the Zouave tradition.  Since the enemy chose gray for their uniform color, General Wallace designed new uniforms for the 11th using black wool. The new uniforms kept the Zouave styling and were actually

cheaper to produce than the traditional four button sack coat.
